VAT number in the Czech Republic
The VAT identification number (VAT ID) is used across the European Union for reporting intra-Community supplies of goods and services. It is required for businesses that trade with other EU member states or are registered for VAT domestically.
Without a valid VAT ID, there is a risk that all intra-Community supplies will be taxable in the member state where the transport begins.
What is a VAT number in the Czech Republic?
In the Czech Republic, the VAT number is called DIČ (daňové identifikační číslo).
- Format: CZ + tax number
- Length: 8 or 9 digits
- Example:

The VAT number is typically based on the company’s tax identification number used for income tax purposes and stated in the commercial register. For entities not established in the Czech Republic, the VAT ID always begins with the digits '68' and it is nine digits long.
Who needs a Czech VAT number?
You must register for VAT in the Czech Republic if you:
- exceed the VAT registration threshold (CZK 2,000,000 turnover)
- provide or receive services within the EU (B2B)
- supply goods to other EU countries
- store goods in the Czech Republic (e.g. Amazon FBA)
- act as a non-resident business with taxable activities in CZ
